Per square foot, budget about $2 to $5 of siding surface, including washing, prep, primer, and two finish coats. Trim-only or door-and-shutter refreshes cost far less and are a great way to lift curb appeal on a budget.
Why prep costs more here — and why it's worth it
New England winters are brutal on exteriors. Freeze-thaw cycles, moisture, and sun all attack the finish. That's why proper prep — power washing, scraping loose paint, sanding, caulking gaps, and priming bare wood — is the single biggest factor in how long your paint lasts.
A cheap quote almost always means less prep. It looks fine for a season, then blisters and peels. Paying for thorough prep and premium, weather-rated coatings up front is how you get 8–12 years out of a job instead of 2–3.
Timing matters too
